Bio

Maria Figueroa-Armijos, PhD is an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at EDHEC Business School. She previously held appointments in the Kogod School of Business at American University (AU) and in the Schar School of Policy at George Mason University (GMU), in Washington D.C.

Professor Figueroa-Armijos' academic interests lie at the intersection of entrepreneurship, social responsibility, and business ethics. Current research projects focus on entrepreneurship as a catalyst for decarbonization, AI ethics, sustainability drivers in crowdfunding, and women’s entrepreneurial financing. She has lectured extensively on these topics in the USA and Europe, receiving pedagogical excellence awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Her research has also been recognized for its societal impact by the Responsible Research in Business & Management Network.

Professor Figueroa-Armijos has served as a reviewer for several top journals in entrepreneurship, business ethics, and management, and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Management Studies. She also served as the Academic Director for the MSc in Sustainability Management (a STEM degree) and AU’s Sustainability Minor at AU, and as a Research Affiliate at the Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Figueroa-Armijos earned her doctorate at the University of Missouri-Columbia – Go Tigers! She also holds a master’s degree in Applied Economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a bachelor’s degree (Honors) in Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management from EARTH University in Costa Rica, which was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for its commitment to "training leaders of change dedicated to creating a more peaceful and just society."
