The three executives who spoke at this initial conference organized by EDHEC Young Entrepreneurs, the EDHEC business incubator, emphasized the characteristics typical of franchises and their particular entrepreneurial dynamic. For nearly an hour and a half, Laurent Vimont, CEO of Century21 France, Christophe Mulliez, manager of three McDonald’s in the Lille metro area, and Thomas Pocher, manager of two local E. LECLERC supermarkets, discussed these issues. They offered the students in attendance a broad overview of this form of entrepreneurship from the perspective of the both the franchisee and the franchiser. All agreed on the entrepreneurial dimension of a franchise, as well as on its human dimension: “At first you think it’s a business venture,” says Christophe Mulliez, “but you soon realize it’s above all a human venture.”Co-hosted by students from the EDHEC MSc in Entrepreneurship and from the ESPEME Horizon Entreprendre programme, this series of conferences, the first of which was held on 24 October, serves to familiarize students and others with diverse forms of entrepreneurship. The next conference, on social entrepreneurship, will take place in December.
