First-year EDHEC Grand Ecole students learned the finer points of negotiation from experienced managers at the 4th annual Negotiation Seminar, held March 25 and 26 on the Lille campus. This annual event brings students and business leaders together to work on case studies from big-name international brands.
The 2014 edition included EDHEC business partners Air Liquide, Auchan, Axa, Brasseries Kronenbourg, Carrefour, Groupe CRIT, GDF Suez, La Poste, Lactalis, Lyreco, Mars, Nature et Découvertes, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, and Atos Worldline. Roughly 50 top-tier managers helped 600 students to get the best deal possible.
Also present at this year’s event were special guests Marc de Bayser, producer of the film “Diplomatie,” a recent release (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsjuAHz4yYc ), and BMX European champion and EDHEC alumnus Arthur Dietrich. De Bayser spoke about the diplomacy used to save Paris’ cultural treasures from bombing by the Germans during WWII; and Dietrich talked about how he had used negotiation to build a successful career as a business owner and entrepreneur.
Edhec students said the appreciated the opportunity to work directly with business leaders and to see from the inside what it’s like to negotiate multi-million-euro deals. This “coproduction” between students and businesses is one of the strengths of the EDHEC degree and the foundation of the EDHEC for Business motto. Businesses get great results too: They can locate promising young business leaders in a challenging setting that tests management knowledge and skills.
“We had the chance to work with professionals who really instructed and coached us,” said a student who attended the event. “The case studies were pulled from real-life negotiations between some of the biggest corporations in the world.”
