EDHEC was pleased to welcome a new industry expert from top-level management, Jean-Yves Courtois who has over 15 years of experience in business development, strategic marketing, strategy, M&A and general management in the electronic components, equipment and systems industry.

A graduate of the École Polytechnique, Jean-Yves Courtois explained the key concepts and the need for a strategic marketing approach for organisations that develop competitively market technical products.

Headquartered in Sophia-Antipolis, Orolia Group, with a presence in eight countries, has an ambitious R&D strategy and a sales presence in more than 90 countries. Mr Courtois explained that the company’s ‘build-up’ strategy has won several prizes, among them the Creative Boldness Award. Mr Courtois highlighted the keys to the group’s strategy for moving up the value chain: (1) a profound understanding of customer needs, (2) long-term loyalty and (3) value creation. Today, the group has 320 employees in eight countries and announced a sales turnover of €70m, 12.7 times greater than eight years ago.

The session also covered the challenges faced by Orolia as a fast-growing company active around the world. Jean-Yves Courtois explained that—as a company listed on a stock market—the key challenges are the capability to deliver consistently, predictably, investor pressure for cash cycle and continuous performance improvement. He emphasised how innovation maximises the value perception among customers, enabling Orolia to launch breakthrough innovations and help create new untapped markets. He underlined ‘the strengths of the value proposition, the go-to-market strategy, the business model, as well as the talent and the charisma of the management team play a major role in the success of any innovation.’

To conclude this session, Mr Courtois went back over the key reasons for Orolia’s success: (1) customer focus, (2) innovation and (3) a strong collaborative approach. The company also values operational excellence, humility and agility while providing the world-class products and solutions that will deliver the best experience possible to its customers.
