The association was originally planned in 1939 and The Journal of Finance was first published in 1946. Its membership has grown to 8,000. The association sponsors an annual meeting at which papers covering the whole gamut of financial topics are presented. This conference is regarded as the most prestigious venue at which to present research work in the field of finance, which translates in the most competitive selection process for articles. The current president of the association is Professor Raghuram Rajan of the University of Chicago. The association has officers and a board of directors who assist in key decisions. On the board of directors, Professor Uppal is joined by fellow EDHEC-Risk Institute PhD in Finance faculty member Professor Harrison Hong of Princeton University, and nine other distinguished scholars: Professor Nicholas Barberis of Yale University, Professor Markus Brunnermeier of Princeton University, Professor John Cochrane of the University of Chicago, Professors Darrell Duffie and Monika Piazzesi of Stanford University, Professors Robert McDonald and Paola Sapienza of Northwestern University, Professor Lasse Pedersen of New York University, and Professor Michael Weisbach of Ohio State University. Professor Uppal is the only board member of the American Finance Association not to be working at a US university.
